Cooking Experiences

Authentic Cooking Class (3-5 hours)

Experience true Mayan cooking using local produce, utensils and techniques.

Indigenous Mayan women in Guatemala are talented cooks using methods and techniques they learned from their ancestors. Currently these practices have been strongly influenced by some Spanish methods.

The base of the diet are herbs, vegetables, corn and beans. Each host house has a garden based on permaculture principles, this garden becomes the place where guests are invited to harvest fresh and organic products for their consumption.

Each community has specific dishes and some are served on specific dates, depending on the customs and traditions of each community.

Follow the journey from seed to your plate. You will learn the healing properties of each plant that they have in the garden. You will harvest herbs, vegetables, aromatic herbs for the dish you have chosen to make. If the host has a farm, you can also collect eggs, cow's milk (if it is the season) for the dish you are preparing. You will learn to make a cake, prepare cheese (depending on the season), use the grinding stone and learn the cooking methods of native dishes, preserves and spices.

You will also have the option to pick up ingredients that are not kept in the host house at the local market, where you will learn about the food production system of local farmers and appreciate the diversity of fresh produce in the community.
